My Top Five “Fine Hair Friendly” Serums!

One perk I enjoy from working at ULTA is getting the chance to try different hair product lines. I discuss  with co-workers and guests what I like or don’t like about each product, or the line as a whole. I receive feedback as well.  As a cosmetologist, there are beauty supply perks for me too! Trying prestige brands at a discounted rate, receiving promotional packages, starter kits and samples is great!

I’ve been asked many times by ULTA guests for frizz control oil recommendations that are not too oily or sticky. Serums-not oils are my go-to solution. Many people who are not beauty product junkies like myself, don’t separate the two. Silicone based serums can also add the needed slip to wet hair when detangling and they often pair will with other common styling aids. These give the hair a light, silky feel without over-drying the hair or making it feel greasy. The key is finding the right serums (or oil blends) that are not heavily diluted with filler ingredients and fragrance. These (in my opinion) add weight to the hair without noticeable shine or frizz control. Sometimes these filler ingredients can dry out the hair and cause itchiness and flaking to the scalp.

My personal preferences for hair serums is that they:

  • Aren’t alcohol or oil-based; silicones and their variations are the primary ingredients.

  • Serum disappears into the hair, or leaves noticeable shine and polish with only a couple of drops.

  • A clear (or mostly clear) formula

  • Little to no fragrance.

    • If there is a fragrance, it shouldn’t be overly strong and is harmonious with the fragrances of other products in my regimen.

My top five list has a couple of old favorites, as well as some recent trials. These serums almost disappear into the hair, yet still add shine and polish with ZERO flatness to fine hair.

  1. Aquage Pearl Oil

    • High silicone composition. Ironically contains very little oil. Almost no fragrance or alcohol. Pairs well with most styling products.

    • **Is also a budget-friendly prestige serum. My go-to for finishing a blowout, or flat-iron hairstyles.

  2. Chi Royal Treatment Bond and Repair Oil

    • Very light composition. Silky feel. A luxurious fragrance. A good balance of silicones, silk proteins and alcohol.

  3. Bumble and Bumble Hairdresser’s Invisible Oil

    • Very similar to the Aquage oil. Light fragrance. More serum can be used for fuller hair densities and textures. Works best when the hair is primed with the Bumble and Bumble Invisible Oil Primer Spray

  4. Nexxus Repair & Nourish Rose Of Jericho Hair Oil

    • Is a budget friendly alternative to prestige oils that I inform ULTA guests about. A thick consistency. A decent balance in the silicone to oil to alcohol ratio. The fragrance is a hit or miss from person to person.

  5. Redken Frizz Dismiss Serum

    • A light silicone treatment. Works best when the hair is primed with the Redken One United Multibenefit Spray (on fine hair).

Thanks for reading down this far. I hope my serum reviews listed above are helpful. If you need a hairstyle or make-up design for an evening out, keep me in mind!
